If you are being honest, you may have to admit that some of your weight loss pursuits rest on this one thing: you want to be thinner. Some of us are in bodies that are quite fine from the point of health, but we just feel that they are not small enough. Small enough to meet the societal pressures around us. I write to you from the frontlines of my own journey. Though I have not arrived, I recognize that the journey should have always been about me being in my right-sized body—one that may or may not align with the current standards for thinness. As I continue to work to live a life pursuing freedom as defined by my behaviors, rather than my weight, here are some tips that may be helpful for you:
- Shift Your Focus to Health: Concentrate on how you feel rather than how you look. Prioritize activities that make you feel strong, healthy, and energized.
- Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Recognize that your worth is not determined by your size. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend.
- Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself thinking negatively about your body, challenge those thoughts. Ask yourself if they are true or if they are influenced by societal pressures.
- Surround Yourself with Positivity: Follow body-positive influencers, read books, and watch media that celebrate body diversity. Surround yourself with people who support and uplift you.
- Set Realistic Goals: Focus on achievable health goals that are not related to weight. This could be improving your stamina, eating more vegetables, or practicing mindfulness.
- Seek Professional Support: Consider talking to a therapist or counselor who specializes in body image issues. They can provide tools and strategies to help you develop a healthier relationship with your body.
- Engage in Joyful Movement: Find physical activities that you enjoy and that make you feel good, rather than those that are solely focused on weight loss.
- Practice Gratitude: Regularly remind yourself of the things your body allows you to do. This can help shift your focus from appearance to functionality and appreciation.
- Educate Yourself: Learn about the impact of diet culture and how it perpetuates unrealistic body standards. Understanding this can help you resist its influence.
- Build a Support Network: Connect with others who are on a similar journey. Sharing experiences and support can be incredibly empowering.
Remember, it’s a journey, and it’s okay to have ups and downs. The goal is to cultivate a positive and accepting relationship with your body. How do these suggestions resonate with you?
