Sis, you need to cut it OUT, not cut it back.”

A Person Using Pruning Shears

Whoo. This is a challenging one. Even for me. We have a saying in the weight loss world: “all things in moderation.” However, if there are certain foods that ensnare you every time, that mentality may just be keeping you in chains. For example, can you think of a food that may fall in this category? If you eat just one _______, then you will not be able to stop. Or do you remember certain foods that always cause you to overeat?

Why do we keep eating them? Especially if they get in the way of us achieving our life, weight, and health goals? We justify eating decisions because that is “way I’ve always eaten,” or “there’s no way I could ever live without xxx” or “that’s just who I am, I love eating XXX.”

Friend, stop right now. We have to stop justifying our relationship with things that have come to “take us out.” If it is harming you, then is it really something you cannot afford to change?

Some wisdom from the Bible may be applicable here: “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut if off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.” (Matthew 5:29-30).

In this passage, Jesus is not literally talking about physically cutting off a body part, but instead he is using this imagery to teach his followers that “whatever gets in the way of us being obedient to God needs to be cut off.” That means, dear friend, this requires honesty. You know the food that I am referring to—the one that you cannot live without, but that keeps you in a pattern of overeating, risks your health, or causes excessive weight gain.

We should not just allow things to be around us that are poisonous. We SHOULD NOT ALLOW IT.

It is not your friend. If it is causing you harm, it is not your friend. Food is not our friend. It is a tool for fuel and life.

Sis, choose YOU. Don’t let _______ keep you from your life. Cut it OUT.

Will it be easy? No. But, with God’s help, it might save your life.
